About Canyon Matka and Skopje
Fun Fact: Skopje is sometimes called “The City of a Thousand Statues”. Skopje is a city where history and humor collide. It’s famous for having over 280 statues crammed into its compact center — including an enormous (but legally unnamed) statue of Alexander the Great. Locals jokingly call it “Warrior on a Horse” to avoid political debates, but everyone knows who it is.
Did you know? Canyon Matka is one of the oldest artificial lakes in Macedonia, created in 1938. Beneath its crystal-clear waters hides Vrelo Cave, one of the deepest underwater caves in the world — and no one knows how deep it truly goes. The canyon is also famous for its 77 species of butterflies, making it one of Europe’s butterfly hotspots!
